Refugee 101: The Jewish Imperative to Welcome the Stranger

Presenter: Joe Goldman, Community Engagement Director, HIAS

Come to learn about the refugee crisis — a global problem of human suffering with more displaced people than after WWII. Through conversation, facts, figures and Jewish texts, we will learn about the extent of the problem, as well as practical steps on how to help. HIAS (founded as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) has been aiding refugees and asylum seekers for more than 138 years and brings their valuable expertise to Congregation Or Ami.

Joe Goldman is the Los Angeles-based Community Engagement Director for HIAS, the world’s oldest, and only Jewish, refugee resettlement agency. Prior to HIAS, Joe served as the Senior Policy Associate at MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger. Before returning to his native Los Angeles, Joe spent several years working in heart of the Bay Area's tumultuous local political environment, most recently as the Public Affairs & Civic Engagement Manager for San Francisco at the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC). Joe holds both a Master’s of Political Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Communication from The George Washington University in Washington, DC.
